Have you ever tried to use frozen brown sugar?

My mother in law keeps her extra packages in the freezer and while she is in the hospital I thought I would bake some cookies. But the brown sugar is solid as a rock!! Is there a good way to thaw it besides waiting? And will it ever soften up? HELP!
