If I add Hops to my old english pork stew will it add the same flavour as beer?

I make a lot of stews, but lately we have not been able to afford the Alexander Keith's Dark I like to add in there and that throws off the pepper not having it; so can I add hops to my stew to add a beer flavour; also will the hops do like the arutabega does and break down and become tender?
